Handcrafted open and closed terrariums — living forest ecosystems designed for homes, workspace, and mindful gifting.
The story of Ghaṭikānana began long before the brand was born — it started with a spark of curiosity in the year 1995, when its founder Vihangakash Bhatt, still a 9th standard student, came across an article in Safari Magazine written in Gujarati by Shri Harshal Pushkarna.
The article described a fascinating experiment — a sealed glass bottle that contained a tiny ecosystem which had been thriving on its own for years, without a drop of water or a breath of fresh air from the outside world.
The most famous example — and the one that inspired millions including Ghaṭikānana! — is the sealed glass bottle garden of David Latimer, from Surrey, England. He created it in 1960, once opened in 1972 for watering and is still alive. He placed it near a window, using only natural sunlight. He used Tradescantia fluminensis (spiderwort). The result is a completely self-sustaining ecosystem.
This terrarium became one of the longest-living closed ecosystems on Earth, proving that with the right balance, nature truly thrives in harmony — even within glass.
That story struck a deep chord. It wasn’t just about science — it was about life, balance, and the silent magic of nature’s self-sustaining power.
The young mind was filled with wonder:
“Can nature truly live forever — if we only let it be?”
That single question became the seed of inspiration that lay dormant for years, quietly growing until it found its form decades later — in the shape of Ghaṭikānana, meaning ‘Forest in a Bottle’.
Today, Ghaṭikānana carries forward that same fascination — crafting miniature worlds that breathe, evolve, and remind us of nature’s resilience.
Each terrarium is not just decor; it’s a living story, a tribute to that moment of discovery that began with an article in Safari Magazine and grew into a lifelong journey of art and ecology.
“From the pages of a magazine to the palms of your hands — every Ghaṭikānana terrarium carries the spirit of that first forest in glass.”

“We don’t just build terrariums — we create tiny worlds where the forest breathes within.”
In Sanskrit, Ghaṭikā symbolizes both containment and moment. It represents a vessel that holds something precious — and also a unit of time, a fleeting yet continuous cycle. Thus, in the name Ghaṭikānana, the jar is not just a container of plants — it is a container of life and time itself. Inside it, every drop of dew, every breath of air, every beam of light flows in rhythm — creating a timeless ecosystem.
“Each terrarium becomes a living clock — where nature marks time in silence and growth.”
Kānana evokes the idea of nature in its purest form — a forest untouched, harmonious, and ever-living. It is not just greenery, but the spirit of wilderness, the rhythm of life that sustains all beings. When placed within Ghaṭikā, the Kānana transforms — a vast forest condensed into a single, self-sustaining world inside glass.
Ghaṭikānana thus becomes a metaphor for balance —a union of the finite and infinite, time and life, container and creation.
It reminds us that even within limits, nature finds a way to flourish endlessly.
“Within every Ghaṭikānana lies a universe — a silent forest where time itself breathes.”

The Vihāraṇa Series draws its name from the idea of gentle flourishing—life unfolding in quiet balance. Conceived as self-sustaining ecosystems, each closed terrarium in this collection is designed to mirror nature’s ability to regulate itself. Water cycles endlessly, air is exchanged through living plants, and growth occurs without force or excess. Vihāraṇa represents the foundation of Ghaṭikānana: thoughtfully constructed worlds where intervention is minimal and observation becomes the primary act. These terrariums are created to live alongside their environment, evolving calmly over time. The core collection of Ghaṭikānana.

The Pravidita Collection takes its inspiration from clarity, light, and openness. Designed as open terrariums, these compositions allow plants to interact freely with air and surrounding space. Unlike closed ecosystems, Pravidita emphasizes visible growth, defined forms, and adaptability—making it ideal for succulents, cacti, and sun-loving species. This collection reflects a more expressive relationship between nature and environment, where structure and openness coexist. Pravidita terrariums bring botanical presence into bright interiors while maintaining the refined simplicity of Ghaṭikānana’s design philosophy.

The Āmṛtāraṇya Series is inspired by the timelessness of ancient forests—spaces where layers of life coexist in depth and continuity. This premium collection elevates the closed terrarium into a living landscape, emphasizing structure, scale, and narrative. Moss-covered forest floors, natural stone, and carefully selected plant communities come together to form immersive ecosystems that feel both expansive and intimate. Designed as statement pieces, Āmṛtāraṇya terrariums celebrate longevity, endurance, and the quiet permanence found in mature woodland environments. Premium collection of Ghaṭikānana.
